What other learners are saying

★★★★★ "I've been using Memrise for about two years, studying European Portuguese. I have the paid version - it's a solid learning tool, and it has been my primary resource ever since got it. I find the Learn with Locals feature to be especially useful, more so as my Portuguese improves. My wife and I spent a couple of weeks in Portugal a few months ago, and we were able to handle all of our transactions - stores, restaurants, markets, car rental, etc!" -Voloúre

So demotivating. Lacklustre course design and increasing sense of data harvesting since recent updates. There is no regular review element and little sense of build-up or progress. The AI conversations are frustrating and seem to be designed to extract personal information from the user. I don't wish to share personal information with an AI and certainly wouldn't want to prop up the dream of a language learning machine that the asset holders behind this app seem to be caught up in.

They keep trying to get me to purchase the lifetime subscription. I might have considered it, but my Polish friend pointed out the many basic mistakes the AI wasn't picking up on. Words are coming up wrong, conjugations aren't correct. When a language app can't be trusted to perform it's primary function, why would I pay for a subscription at all?

There are many things to like with memories. The AI conversations, the range of different speakers, the lack of bizarre phrases a la Duolingo. However, there is one thing that's a huge downside. I practice every single day. Memrise just resets my streak regularly. I think I once managed to get to around 40 days but it's usually somewhere between 15 and 30 days! Sort it please! One thing I miss from Duo is the ability to follow friends and see their progress.
